How do we check your personalized children’s book?

After you order, we check your book automatically and Wouter or Lisa reviews it personally before printing. Here is what we look for and what we do if something still goes wrong.

At BoekjesAtelier, every ordered book gets automated checks and a personal review before it goes to the printer. The software looks for problems in the illustrations and the book as a whole. Wouter or Lisa personally reviews every order, even when the software flags nothing.

You can see the complete preview before you order. During creation, rules help prevent mistakes. After printing, the printer checks the physical copy. Problems can still occur despite these checks.

What checks happen while you create your book?

A child wearing a yellow jumper on one page should not suddenly be wearing a blue coat on the next unless the story calls for it. We give the AI instructions about the character, clothing and recurring objects. Your chosen cover also provides a visual reference for the story illustrations. These rules are intended to prevent mistakes during creation. The automated review after you order examines the finished book for problems that still occurred.

The software also checks that the required illustrations have finished generating before you can order. You can review the whole preview and change text or images. At checkout, you confirm that you have checked the book. Pay particular attention to names and personal details. You know what your child calls their favourite soft toy, for example.

What do the automated checks look for?

An automated AI review starts after you order. It first examines individual illustrations, then reviews the book as a whole. This helps us find differences between pages that would not be apparent from a single picture.

The checks look for issues including:

  • Illustrations that contradict the text, such as a missing character or object needed for the action described on that page.
  • Obvious distortions in a picture, such as an extra arm or an object with an impossible structure.
  • Unintended differences between pages, such as changing clothes, a different appearance for the child or a recurring object that suddenly changes shape.
  • Missing or misspelled titles within images, and illustrations that drift away from the chosen art style.

Does a person check every order?

Yes. Wouter or Lisa looks through every ordered book before it goes to the printer, including books where the automated checks found no issues. You do not need to request this separately.

We assess the possible problems flagged by the software and examine the book ourselves. A flag does not necessarily mean something is wrong: a change of clothes might belong in a dressing-up scene. The AI can also miss a problem. That is why our own review remains part of the process.

We are the people behind BoekjesAtelier. You can read how we started with a book for our own child at Where It All Began: The Adventures of Pim.

What happens at the printer?

After our review, the digital book goes to the printer to be printed and bound. Quality at this stage also means physical finishing, such as a securely attached cover. You cannot assess that from a digital preview.

Every printed book receives a quality control sticker at the printer. The sticker makes the check traceable to a staff member. This physical check serves a different purpose from our review of the illustrations and story. It cannot rule out a problem becoming apparent later.

What if something is still wrong with your book?

That can happen. One example comes from a review on Trustpilot. Jaimy was happy with the content of the book, but reported that the cover was coming loose. We sent a replacement copy. Jaimy later updated the review to confirm that the replacement had arrived and was in perfect condition. You can read the original complaint, the update and our reply in Dutch at Jaimy’s review.

Despite the checks, the cover had not been properly finished. The problem was reported after delivery. A replacement copy resolved it.

If something is wrong when your book arrives, email info@boekjesatelier.nl with your order details and a photo of the problem. We will look into what happened and work out an appropriate solution.

How do reviews and feedback help us improve the software?

We keep improving our software using what we discover during book reviews and the feedback we receive from customers. We examine the illustrations, the text and how they fit together. Recurring issues help us refine our instructions and improve our checks. What we learn from earlier books helps us prevent and spot mistakes in future books.

Please do not hesitate to report a mistake just because you already approved the preview. Let us know so we can take a look.
