From Favourite Stuffed Animal to Children's Book

Almost every child has one: a stuffed animal that goes everywhere with them. What if that same beloved toy became the star of their very own bedtime story?

Almost every child has one: a stuffed animal that goes everywhere with them.

To bed, on holiday, to nursery. Sometimes a little worn out, but loved all the more for it.

What if that same beloved toy also got a role in its very own bedtime story? Not as a background prop, but as a recognizable sidekick alongside your child.

Since our sidekick update, you can intentionally add a second character to your book: New features: a sidekick and a smoother flow

That can be a sibling, grandparent, pet, or a favorite stuffed animal. The sidekick then returns throughout the whole story, in the text and in the illustrations. That way the book feels not only like it is about your child, but also about the little world around them.

Why stuffed animals work so well in stories

For children, stuffed animals are often real friends. Something between fantasy and reality. That is exactly what makes them such a great foundation for a story.

  • Children are emotionally attached to their stuffed animal, so they feel immediately drawn into the story.
  • Stuffed animals make stories playful and adventurous — anything is possible.
  • It makes reading aloud feel familiar: this is my toy, this is my adventure.

When does a stuffed animal work well as a sidekick?

A stuffed animal does not need to be perfect or new. A well-loved toy with its own look often works best.

That is also what we believe from personal experience: for a child, a stuffed animal is often much more than a toy. It is something familiar. Something that comes to bed, travels along, and sometimes gives comfort at exactly the right moment. That is why a stuffed animal can work so well in a story. It feels familiar straight away.

It does help if the toy is recognizable enough to become a recurring character.

A stuffed animal as a sidekick works especially well when:

  • your child is genuinely attached to the toy and often keeps it close
  • the stuffed animal has a clear shape, color, or special detail
  • you can take a clear photo where the whole toy is visible
  • the toy fits the kind of story you want to make, such as bedtime, adventure, jungle, dinosaurs, or holiday
  • you want the book to feel personal without overloading the story with lots of separate details

How to work a stuffed animal into a children's book

You choose the role the stuffed animal plays. There are a few options:

The stuffed animal as a funny sidekick who causes comic chaos. The stuffed animal as a hero who solves a problem. Or as the troublemaker your child has to rescue.

You upload a photo of the stuffed animal, add a photo of your child, and briefly tell us who or what the toy is. For example: "green dino plush", "brown teddy bear with a red bow", or "bunny that always comes to bed".

We then use the toy as a recurring character. We try to preserve recognizable colors and details, without making the toy more important than your child. Your child stays the hero of the story; the stuffed animal comes along as a trusted sidekick.

Example: Otis's Dino Adventure

"Otis and his dino stuffed animal go on a real dinosaur adventure together. From fossil hunting to a face-off with a real T-Rex — Otis is up for anything."

For Otis, the dino toy worked well because it immediately gave the story a clear direction. The toy was not just placed somewhere in an illustration; it became a companion in the adventure. That makes the book feel more personal: Otis is the main character, and his own dino travels with him.

Below you can see a photo of Otis and his favorite dino toy. Underneath that you can flip through the complete book.

Sometimes the best stories begin right in the bedroom. With a stuffed animal, a little imagination, and a child who gets to play the lead.
